Takahiro Sumi: ‘We share the goal of victory’

Paris, October 3rd 2024 - Takahiro Sumi, Managing Director of Motor Sports Development at Yamaha Motor Co. is delighted with the new partnership with TotalEnergies. He explains...

What are your expectations from the partnership agreement with TotalEnergies?

By collaborating with TotalEnergies, which has significantly developed advanced sustainable fuel technology in other applications, our primary goal is to leverage superior engine power and fuel efficiency for our YZR-M1 machine in the fight for victory. At the same time, it is crucial to expand the use of sustainable fuels and develop our adaptation technologies as a practical solution to actively contribute to the sustainability of the motorcycle industry’s future. In MotoGP, the pinnacle of motorcycle racing, another major objective is to integrate the best technologies from both companies to concretely define the future of fuels and machines for a better tomorrow.

Does the agreement concern MotoGP only, or other competitions as well?

Although our agreement is specific to MotoGP, the combined technology of both TotalEnergies and YAMAHA will be applied not only to MotoGP but also to categories using bikes closer to production models, such as Yamaha's WSBK and bLU cRU World Cup races. The development of practical sustainability technology has already begun to ensure that the enjoyment of motorcycling can continue into the future.

How will the two companies' engineers work together?

Between TotalEnergies and YAMAHA, there are many differences in areas such as mechanical and chemical engineering, as well as in regions, languages, and more. However, we share a deep, mutual commitment to the spirit of challenge as engineers, all aiming for the common goal of victory. We've come to realize that we have more in common than we initially thought, and through natural communication, our collaboration has become increasingly enjoyable.

How important is fuel in terms of performance in MotoGP?

Needless to say, engine power is the most important factor in terms of race performance on the track, and depending on the circuit, there are many cases where the balance with fuel efficiency is more critical. A strategy to compete in various environments with the best configuration throughout the season, such as high or low temperatures and circuit characteristics etc, is an important factor for victory. To achieve that, better integration of machine design and fuel formulation with good cooperation will be another key factor finally.

In 2027, the regulations will change, with a reduction in both engine capacity and fuel tank capacity. As an engineer, will this change your approach to development?

The 2027 regulations are being developed through the cooperation of many involved parties, including organizers, manufacturers, fuel suppliers, and even competitors, to achieve the common goal of enhancing the appeal of racing and the enjoyment of motorcycling in the future, while fulfilling the industry’s social responsibilities. We believe that if we can establish a healthy competitive environment with mutual prosperity (which will be a challenge), the engineering pursuit of the best performance under the new conditions will ultimately be driven by the same principle: ‘just do the best’!
