The regulations

The EWC Endurance World Championship has some unique features. All events are run partly at night, even the 8-hour races. Unlike most other competitions, the choice of tyres is free. Another special feature is the ‘Le Mans-style’ start, with riders running across the track to mount their bikes.

In these long-distance races, where men and machines are put to the test, the teams line up two or three riders who take it in turns to refuel and change wheels.

Within the same events, there are two categories, each with its own ranking.

EWC

This is the category in which teams compete for the title of world endurance champion. The bikes can be identified by their black number plates and white headlights. This is the premier class, with the most highly developed machines. The overall appearance of the bike must remain the same as that of the homologated machine, but it is possible to replace the forks, shock absorber, swingarm, brakes, radiator and exhaust. A certain amount of freedom is allowed to enhance engine performance. These machines are equipped with a quick-change wheel system.

Superstock

This is the category in which teams competing in the Endurance World Cup compete. The bikes can be identified by their red number plates and yellow headlights. Superstock machines are very similar to production models. The engine must remain in its original configuration and modifications are very limited: mapping of the electronic injection boxes, reinforcement of the clutch, change of the exhaust silencer. The wheels remain in their original configuration, which requires a good strategy for changing tyres when refueling.

In both EWC and Superstock, the fuel tank has been modified to give a maximum capacity of 24 litres, with a quick-fill system.

Production

Created this year to promote and widen access to the World Endurance Championship, the Production category brings together teams racing on almost stock production motorbikes. To limit operating costs and ensure that this new class is accessible both financially and in terms of performance, these motorbikes must retain many original components such as the electronics or the fuel tank. The fuel tank is replaced during pit stops using a quick-release connector rather than by refuelling the bike. A minimum pit stop time is applied for safety reasons. Dunlop is the exclusive tyre supplier. Competitors in this category take part in the Endurance World Trophy.

Practice

Before the start of the race, free and timed practice sessions are organised for all riders in three categories: blue, red and green. The best times of the three drivers in each team are added together to form the starting grid.

Races

There are 4 races in the EWC World Championship: two 24-hour races and two 8-hour races. The points system varies from race to race. The team that wins a 24 Hours race pockets 40 points, the team that finishes second 33, the third 28, the fourth 24, the fifth 21, the sixth 19, the seventh 17, the eighth 15, the ninth 13, the tenth 11... All the way down to the twentieth, which scores 1 point. The team that wins an 8-hour race pockets 30 points, the team that finishes second 24, the third 21, the fourth 19, the fifth 17, the sixth 15, the seventh 14, the eighth 13, the ninth 13, the tenth 11... Down to the twentieth team, which scores 1 point. For 24-hour races, bonuses are also awarded to the top 10 after 8 hours and 16 hours of racing.
