Rea the boss

With a third place and another two wins, Jonathan Rea managed to increase his overall lead in Portugal. The seven times world champion clearly intends to maintain his winning ways.

If last season the Estoril circuit caused problems for Jonathan Rea, this year in Portugal he had a virtually untroubled run. Beaten to the line by Redding and Razgatlioglu on the first race, on Saturday afternoon, the seven times world champion stamped his authority on the series the following day by winning both the Sprint race and Race 2. “I am really happy with this weekend as we managed to solve the problems we had here last year,” commented Rea. “The second race was a lot of fun. I nearly touched Rinaldi and then I had to fight with Laverty… I thought I was going to run into problems with my tyres, with my choice being different to the others, but it didn’t turn out to be the case. Once I found my pace I managed to come back on Toprak and Chaz. Scott held on for a while but I managed to pull away from him. When he went off that gave me some space. I am really happy with how the team worked this weekend.”

Falling on Saturday afternoon but restarting to finish nineteenth, Alex Lowes finished sixth and fourth the following day. “My position on the starting grid made life difficult,” reckoned to British rider. “It is difficult to overtake on this circuit and I didn’t want to repeat Saturday’s mistake.” In Supersport Phillip Oettl twice got on the podium, finishing second and third. Two good results that allows the Pucetti Racing rider to move up to third overall in the rankings. “I am happy because the conditions weren’t ideal due to the heat,” commented the German. “My tyres went off quickly and the bike was sliding a lot. All in all I am really satisfied with the result.” Not so happy was Can Öncü, with the Turk falling on Saturday and finishing fourteenth on Sunday.
