DS TECHEETAH and Da Costa clinch titles!

BERLIN TEMPELHOF AIRPORT, GERMANY - AUGUST 09: Antonio Félix da Costa (PRT), DS Techeetah, 2nd position during the Berlin ePrix IV at Berlin Tempelhof Airport on Sunday August 09, 2020 in Berlin, Germany.

Whilst the track configuration changed at Berlin-Tempelhof, with races three and four contested on the traditional version of the circuit, the form of the DS TECHEETAH remained unerringly constant. Ever present at the front since the start of the six-race finale at the former German airport, the French-Chinese team confirmed the strong pace of the DS E-TENSE FE20, as Jean-Eric Vergne secured pole position for race 1. Although the Frenchman could only finish third after running low on energy towards the end of the race, he nonetheless collected a good haul of points, as did Da Costa, who had fought back well to finish fourth after starting ninth on the grid. The result meant that DS TECHEETAH went into race four with a real chance of securing both titles. It was an opportunity that it was not going to waste! The team secured a one-two finish in qualifying – with Vergne in pole position ahead of Da Costa – before producing a complete performance in the race, with its two drivers crossing the finishing line in the same order. “I have no words right now,” said a delighted Da Costa, the first FE driver to win the title with two races of the season remaining. “The bad times come to my mind because I came so close to giving up on many occasions in my career, but thanks to everyone around me I never did. This team knew what I could do even when I was finishing nowhere near the podium and they brought me back.” Jean-Eric Vergne sportingly paid tribute to his team-mate’s achievement: “It was a perfect day for the team! I know how it feels when you are behind the wheel on the final lap and you’re about to win your first title. It’s probably the best moment in the life of a racing driver and Antonio absolutely deserves to experience it. He has had a very strong season.” A fine tribute from the two-time champion, and one which is richly deserved.

Championship update

In winning the opening two races of the six scheduled in nine days at the former Berlin-Tempelhof airport, Antonio Felix Da Costa and DS Techeetah had already put one hand on the drivers’ and teams’ titles. At this second double-header, the 28 year-old Portuguese driver collected his sixth podium in nine races this season (2nd in race 2) to secure his first Formula E title with two races still to go, thus succeeding his team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne as champion. In grabbing a podium finish in the opening race (3rd) before finishing first in the second contest – claiming his first win this year and notching up the team’s fourth victory – Vergne made an active contribution to DS Techeetah’s second successive teams’ title. Now second in the drivers’ championship, you can be sure that the defending two-time champion will be determined to ensure he ends the season as runner-up in the final two races (12 & 13 August).

Total follows a meticulous protocol in developing each of its racing products. The first stage involves defining the specifications in terms of performance, consumption reduction, heat-elimination capacity, etc. with the partner – in this case, DS TECHEETAH for FE. For the DS E-TENSE FE20 this means the electric motor cooling fluid, but also the gearbox and differential coolant, as well as the wheel bearing lubricants. Total’s chemical engineers then get to work to find the best possible formula. Once this stage is completed, it is then time to approve the product(s) with the manufacturer, on the test bed and on track. Initially, this involves checking that the required performance improvement has been achieved before then assessing whether the product possesses the requisite endurance qualities.
